Atmos - Osprey Packs - Dolores, CO

Let’s face it, thru-hiking is a difficult, challenging endeavor, at best. To make things easy, it’s important that you outfit yourself with the proper gear, and the starting point for all of that should be your pack. With this in mind, Osprey Packs designed the Atmos AG pack for men and the Aura AG pack for women. At heart, they’re extremely similar packs, the Aura being designed with a woman’s physiology and body shape in mind. When it comes to features though, they’re nearly identical.

Both packs start with Osprey’s Anti-Gravity suspension system. Yes, yes, go ahead and pat yourself on the back for figuring out that’s what the AG stands for in the names of both packs. The AG backpanel consists of a continuous panel of lightweight mesh that extends from the top of the backpanel to the hipbelt. While it is true that mesh weighs slightly less than solid fabric, the real benefit comes in the form of airflow. Ever finished up a day of hiking and felt like the back of your shirt could be rung out and used to water every houseplant you’ve got? Yeah, so had the pack-designing wizards over at Osprey. Hence the extremely well-ventilated Anti-Gravity suspension system.

When you have the option of any number of packs customization is king. Don’t believe me? Just ask the good folks over at Lego about how important it is to be able to modify things as you go. Much like when you start building a race car and end up with a fully functioning Saturn V rocket, the Atmos and Aura packs let you configure things to fit your specific needs. Maybe you’ve hiked into your base camp and want to do some peak-bagging for the day. Why haul the full pack with you to the top? Instead, simply remove the floating top lid and lighten your load for your summit attempt. Should the weather start to turn nasty, not to worry, Osprey’s FlapJacket provides compression and protection from all that Mother Nature can dish out.
As much fun as it is to play the “I hope my ice tool doesn’t puncture my down jacket” game, set your mind at ease and strap your tools to the easy to use ice tool loops on the outside of the pack. Speaking of making things easy, removable sleeping pad straps help you turn anywhere you roam into your home away from home. There’s nothing worse than having to repeatedly stop to adjust and stow things when you’re hiking. Well, okay, you could probably find some combination of bears and bees that would be worse, but still. So, it should come as no surprise that Osprey eliminated the need for stops with a fit-on-the-fly hipbelt that can be adjusted throughout your day to help settle the pack, as well as a stow-on-the-go trekking pole attachment that lets you stash your sticks when you need to make a quick scramble.
